Choosing plants for your rockery

Alpines are often recommended for rockeries as they are compact in size and usually very attractive.   They originate from higher up in mountainous areas and developed to survive the harsh windy and dry conditions. The foliage is small to avoid moisture loss and wind damage and the flowers vivid to attract pollenators in a barren wilderness.

Other plants used in rockeries are mostly chosen for their size.   You’ve just paid quite a bit for your rocks and landscaping and so you don’t want it covered up with copious amounts of foliage within a couple of years.
